Lockheed Martin
RE: Systems Engineer – Intern
Dear Hiring Manager,

My name is Jonathan Polanco, I am a Sophomore student at The City College of New York (CCNY).  I am writing to express my interest in the Systems Engineering Intern position at Lockheed Martin.  I have always admired how innovative and transformative Lockheed Martin is and can say that it would be an honor to be considered as a candidate. I am passionate about finding an opportunity where I can implement the knowledge and skillset I’m acquiring in my pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Electrical engineering. I believe that Lockheed Martin has the perfect team, environment and values that can accomplish this.  These values reflect my same values as well.

My admiration for innovations has started ever since I was young. I loved creating things with the resources around me and learning about what things were made of. When I was 8 years old I loved playing with Legos, the feeling of putting effort into creating something and being rewarded by the result of all your ideas working. At the age of 11 I was taking apart my 3ds to understand how it functioned, I was even
able to mod it allowing me to get free games etc. As I grew up I started to realize my passion for technology, creating my own pc from spare parts and later learning to use breadboards, circuits, soldering kits, etc for many other projects.

Though I’m early in my career, my academic background thus far has provided me with a firm foundation in the Engineering principles. I went to High school for CTEA for Engineering where I was able to learn how to effectively use engineering tools such as AutoCAD, Fusion 360, etc throughout my classes.  Through my involvement in
numerous projects in school, I continue to have the opportunity to not only create but also sharpen my skill set and expand my knowledge base particularly when it comes to the development and testing of very complex electrical systems and sub-systems. This experience has led me to understand the importance of problem-solving skills and the
criticality of being a team’s player and in learning how to communicate effectively. I am someone who tends to initiate collaboration in search of a solution. I enjoy the decision-making process behind it and strongly believe that effective collaboration among engineers is what allows us to find a solution to any complex technological
challenges we may encounter.

I later continued my academic journey in Electrical Engineering at CSI, where I expanded my technical skill set through the use of tools such as MATLAB and Wolfram Alpha. I also joined the Electrical Engineering Club, where I worked with peers on hands-on projects, including building a drone from scratch. This project required us to
review many calculations, finding all appropriate components, and understanding system integration, experiences that directly relate to systems engineering concepts. Working on this project strengthened my appreciation for group projects and reinforced my desire to work on large scale, impactful engineering systems.

In addition to my technical interests, I am deeply motivated by the broader and what I believe to be the most important purpose behind engineering. My long term goal is to contribute to the development of technologies that push innovation forward to the future but also serve to protect and help others. Systems engineering appeals to me because it involves technical depth with strategic thinking, allowing engineers to see how certain individual components interact within a larger important system. I am hoping to achieve this goal by learning from experienced Engineers at Lockheed Martin what it means to become an Engineer and contributing to projects that have important real world impact.

Lockheed Martin’s commitment to innovation complemented by a guarantee for national and global safety, very well reflects my personal values and career objectives.  I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to contribute to a company that stands for integrity, excellence, and teamwork in its quest to address the evolving challenges of the aerospace and defense sectors.  Thank you for considering my application. I am eager to discuss more about how
my background and skills could contribute to the work at Lockheed Martin.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Polanco
